Today CASFOD held a workshop with education stakeholders for the moderation of the upcoming spelling bee and mathematics quiz competition questions. The workshop is attended by Education Secretaries and Quality Assurance Officers of the five local governments that will participate in the competition and some representatives of the State Universal Basic Education Board.
The workshop, which was held at the Stalwart Hall in Maiduguri, was aimed at interacting with the stakeholders to decide on how the competition will be run. The stakeholders were intimated on the preparations on ground and to also gain their input on how the questions for the competition would look like.
The spelling bee and mathematics quiz was organised by CASFOD as part of its AGREE project and in commemoration of the International Day for the Girl-Child. The competition will feature schools from Mafa, Kaga, Konduga, MMC and Jere LGAs of Borno. This first season is to commemorate the International Day for the Girl-Child. The winning school takes home N300,000, 1st runner up gets N150,000 and the 2nd runner up takes home N100,000. The cash prizes won will be used by the schools to advance girls’ education.
This project is aimed at improving the learning outcomes of adolescent girls and support them to become better at tech-based learning gadgets like the tablets.
The competition is part of our Adolescent Girls Read, Engage and Empowered (AGREE) project with the goal to support 300 adolescent girls in primary 5, 6 and JSS3 of Mafa, Jere, Konduga, Kaga and MMC local government areas to achieve quality education through tech-based learning.
The AGREE project is a 3-year project with the aim to support and empower adolescent girls whose literacy levels are considered below standard. The project hopes to fill the gap to quality learning opportunities in Borno.
“We are working with girls who have low academic performance in the targeted schools for the AGREE project to improve their literacy level.” The ED said.
The Nigerian Learning Passport will be installed in tablets to support learning in children and to also support formative assessment.
An assessment was done in a public school and it was ascertained that over 50% of girls perform below average, therefore, this project is expected to support and improve the performance of these category of children.
Also, a report by UNICEF revealed that 75% of school pupils in Nigeria cannot read. This is concerning and it is part of the reasons CASFOD is initiating this project to support this category of children.
During the workshop, the Executive Director CASFOD, Mr Benjamin John exposed the stakeholders on the nitty-gritties of the spelling bee and mathematics competition which is kick-starting on 6th November to 31st November this year.
The ED explained that the competition will be tech-based, this is to keep the children abreast with using technology to learn. According to him, the competition is targeting Junior Secondary Schools and Senior Primary Schools (Primary 4, 5 and 6).
